MPI ACQUIRES ‘SLEEP TIGHT,’ ACCLAIMED THRILLER FROM AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR JAUME BALAGUERO
Cannes, France (May 18, 2012) – MPI Media Group today announced it has acquired all North American rights to SLEEP TIGHT, a psychological thriller that has drawn huge audiences and won numerous awards in Spain. Featuring “one of the most charismatic villains in the recent cinema” (Fotogramas), director Jaume Balaguero’s movie will be released theatrically in the fall of 2012 through MPI’s genre arm, Dark Sky Films. The theatrical release will be followed VOD and DVD availability.
SLEEP TIGHT is a Filmax Entertainment and Castelao Pictures production, produced by Julio Fernandez. Written by Alberto Marini (Films to Keep You Awake), it is the latest film from the director of the Calista Flockhart horror movie Fragile.
The North American distribution deal was negotiated by Greg Newman, Executive VP of MPI Media Group, and Ivan Diaz of Filmax, the world sales unit of Bavaria Film and Telepool.
SLEEP TIGHT stars Luis Tosar (The Limits of Control) as Cesar, an apartment building doorman who keeps very close tabs on the residents’ private lives and whose only happiness comes from others’ misery. One building resident in particular, the cheery, happy-go-lucky Clara (Marta Etura of The Impossible, with Ewan McGregor), makes his skin crawl. He becomes determined to do whatever it takes to wipe the smile off her face.
Tense and disturbing, SLEEP TIGHT has been nominated for more than 20 awards in Spain and won six Gaudi Awards, including Best Director for Jaume Balaguero, Best Actor for Luis Tosar and Best Screenplay.
MPI’s Greg Newman said: “MPI/DARK SKY FILMS is fortunate to work with some of the most talented directors in the genre. We have long been fans of Jaume Balaguero, and in SLEEP TIGHT, he has created a modern masterpiece of suspense. We are very pleased to be the North American distributor for this amazing film.”
SLEEP TIGHT is the latest addition to MPI/Dark Sky’s already compelling slate of genre releases and original productions, which includes Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Jim Mickle’s Stake Land, and the upcoming Frankenstein’s Army and Stitches.
